Organizations Aiding Domestic Violence Victims |
| Purpose: |
Every October, the Mary Kay Foundation observes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by awarding grants to deserving women's shelters across the United States. In 2009, the foundation awarded grants of $20,000 each to more than 150 women's shelters across the nation for a total of $3 million. Each year, the foundation awards a grant to at least one shelter in every state. Any remaining funds are distributed based on state population. The funds awarded by the foundation may be used for the operating budget of the shelter, with the exception of staff travel. Shelters that receive grants may not apply the following year, as the foundation wishes to aid the largest number of shelters possible. This requires it to exclude for a period of one year the previous year's awardees.

Basic Center Program |
| Purpose: |
In response to the widespread concern about the problem of runaway and homeless youth, Congress authorized the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act of 1974 (RHYA), which provided financial support for States through a competitive grant program. Funds granted under this award may be used to establish and operate (including renovations) local BCPs that provide both residential and non-residential services for RHY and their families outside of law enforcement and the child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems. Costs for acquisition and renovation of existing structures may not exceed 15 percent of the grant award. Except as allowed by statue at 42 U.S.C. 5712(b)(2)(A), BCPs should be designed to provide up to 21 days of shelter for up to 20 youth, with a minimum of four beds designated to RHY. Services delivered through this program must also address imminent needs of youth through appropriate referrals or direct interventions. Service delivery must comprehensively address the individual strengths and needs of youth as well as be gender specific (interventions that are sensitive to the diverse experiences of male, female, and transgender youth), language appropriate, and culturally sensitive and respectful of the complex identities of youth. This is a 36-month project with three 12-month budget periods. |
